Visit the local Porcelain Factory and enjoy painting your own design on a plate, cup or bowl. Depart for Nagasaki which is one of Japan’s closest port cities to the Asian mainland and played a prominent role in foreign trade relations for many centuries. In more recent history, Nagasaki became the second city after Hiroshima to be decimated by an atomic bomb at the end of World War II. Lunch is included – local specialty “Nagasaki Chang Pong”. In the afternoon, visit the Glover Garden, Dejima Island, and the Meganebashi Bridge. Dinner is not included.

Take the ferry from Shimabara Port for Kumamoto and visit Suizenji Garden and Kumamoto castle. (Currently the castle is damaged from an earthquake.) Lunch at a local restaurant. Day 5 KUMAMOTO – MT. ASO – BEPPU

Breakfast at your hotel. Meet with your English-speaking guide at your hotel and depart for Mt. Aso by private coach. The mountain is located at the center of Aso-Kuju National Park which lies roughly in the centre of Kyushu. It is an active volcano and has many hot springs near-by. After arrival, take a ropeway and visit the Aso Volcano Museum, and then see inside the volcano crater from a safe distance. (The ropeway is currently out of service due to volcanic activity.) After your visit, depart for Beppu. Lunch at a local restaurant – “Korean barbecue”. In the afternoon, visit two of the Beppu hot spring hells: Chinoike Jigoku (blood pond hell); and Umi Jigoku (sea hell). They are called Jigoku (hell) because the sites are unapproachable due to the hot fumarolic gases of around 100 degrees Centigrade. Thermal mud and hot springs have been gushing tremendously from the ground for over 1,000 years. After the visit, depart for Beppu port and sail to Osaka by ferry. Dinner on board (buffet).

Breakfast at your hotel. Upon arrival at the Osaka Ferry Terminal early in the morning, transfer to Osaka city centre by private coach and explore the Namba/Dotombori area with your English-speaking guide on foot. Soon after, depart for Nara located less than one hour from Kyoto and Osaka. Due to its past as the first permanent capital, it remains full of historic treasures, including some of Japan’s oldest and largest temples. Lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, visit Nara Park, established in the 1300s and one of the oldest parks in Japan. The park is home to thousands of freely roaming deer which are considered sacred in Shinto as messengers of the gods. Also, visit Todaiji Temple (UNESCO), one of Japan’s most famous and historically significant Buddhist temples and built in the year 752, and Kasuga Taisha Shrine (UNESCO) which was established at the same time as the capital and is dedicated to the deity responsible for the protection of the city of Nara. This shrine is famous for its hundreds of hanging bronze lanterns. Dinner is not included.

Breakfast at your hotel. Meet with your English-speaking guide at your hotel and depart for Uji by private coach. You will visit Byodoin Temple (UNESCO), and Ujikami Jinja Shrine (UNESCO), and enjoy a tea tasting. After your visit, leave for Fushimi. Lunch at a local “Yakitori” restaurant. After lunch, visit Fushimi Inari Shrine where you will be surrounded by approximately 10,000 red Torii gates which continue along a footpath which stretches to the top of the mountain. Depart for Kyoto and visit Kiyomizudera-Temple (UNESCO), literally `pure water temple’ which was founded on the site of the Otowa Waterfall. It is best known for its wooden stage that juts out from its main hall. (Kiyomizudera-temple main hall is covered up for the renovation of its roof. Visitors will be able to enter the main hall during the renovations.) In the evening, we will enjoy a stroll in Gion area in Kyoto which was built to accommodate the needs of travellers and visitors to the shrine. The Gion district eventually evolved to become one of the most exclusive and well-known geisha districts in all of Japan. Your guide will explain the lives of maiko and geiko. An interesting feature of the garden’s design is that from no horizontal vantage point can all of the rocks be seen.
Nijyo Castle and Garden (UNESCO), built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period.
