Day 2 TOKYO
TOKYO

Meet your English-speaking guide at the hotel and embark on a full-day tour of Japan’s capital by private coach.

We will visit: Observatory of the Metropolitan Government of Tokyo Shinjuku, which offers a bird’s eye view of the whole city; Meiji Jingu shrine, located within the stunning Yoyogi Park; the buzzing districts of Omotesando and Harajuku. After some free time for lunch, we will make a brief stop outside the Imperial Palace grounds.

Then, we head towards Asakusa to visit Asakusa Sensoji Temple, the oldest Buddhist temple in Tokyo. The approach to the temple, called Nakamise, is full of typical stalls and little traditional shops.

Day 3 TOKYO – FUJIKAWAGUCHIKO – MATSUMOTO
MATSUMOTO

Meet your English-speaking tour leader, who will be with you for the next 7 days of this tour.

We travel by private coach to Lake Kawaguchi, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Fuji. We visit the lovely Oishi Park for some memorable shots of Japan’s holy mountain.

After some free time for lunch, we proceed to Matsumoto, home to one of the best-preserved castles in the whole country. After visiting the majestic Raven Castle (so-called because of its deep black colour), enjoy some free time strolling around the compact old town along the Metoba river.

Day 4 MATSUMOTO – NAGANO – YUDANAKA – ITOIGAWA
ITOIGAWA

We drive to Nagano in the heart of the Japanese Alps and former host city of the Winter Olympics in 1998. After visiting the impressive Zenko-ji temple, we head to Yudanaka, the hot spring town that is the gateway to the Jigokudani Monkey Park. After some free time for lunch and an easy hiking trail, enjoy the views of monkeys bathing in the natural hot spring waters.

We drive then to Itoigawa UNESCO Global Geopark, a scenic area to explore dazzling geological and topographical diversity.

We end the tour at our hotel in Itoigawa where you will enjoy a tasty locally-sourced Japanese dinner. Hotel in Itoigawaor nearby.

Day 5 ITOIGAWA – AIZU WAKAMATSU
AIZU WAKAMATSU

We start the day with a drive to the ancient samurai city of Aizu Wakamatsu. The town is famous for being the last outpost standing in defence of the shogunate during the Meiji Restoration period.

After some free time for lunch, we will visit Ouchijuku, the checkpoint famous for its numerous traditional thatched buildings from the Edo Period that line its main street. Then Tsuruga Castle, built in 1384, and hosting an interesting museum with attractive displays about the history of the castle.

A tour of Aizu would not be complete without a visit to one of its renowned sake breweries, producing the country’s most delicious rice wine.

Day 6 AIZU WAKAMATSU – URABANDAI – YAMAGATA – TSURUOKA
TSURUOKA

This morning we drive through the stunning mountain range of Mount Bandai and its beautiful lakes.

After enjoying some views of lakes Onogawa & Hibara, we continue to Yamagata, where we will visit the stunning mountain temple Yamadera. Perched on the side of a mountain, the temple affords amazing views of the valley to the ones who complete the hike to the main hall.

Later we continue to the Shonai area and reach our hotel in Tsuruoka.

Day 7 TSURUOKA – MOGAMI RIVER – SENDAI
SENDAI

We start the day heading to the three sacred mountains Dewa Sanzan, each with a shrine on its peak.

We visit Haguro-san shrine, dedicated to birth, and then enjoy a typical vegetarian shojin lunch, according to the Buddhist tradition. We proceed then to Furukuchi, on river Mogami, where we will board a riverboat for a leisurely ride in this very scenic part of Yamagata prefecture.

We continue our journey to Sendai, the largest city in the Tohoku region, where we will stay for the night. Hotel in Sendai.

Day 8 SENDAI – MATSUSHIMA BAY – ZAO
ZAO

Waking up in Sendai we start with a visit to the city’s most famous mausoleum, the Zuihoden, which features intricate woodwork and a rich variety of vivid colours.

We head now towards Matsushima Bay, declared as one of the three most scenic views of Japan, where we will board a cruise to immerse ourselves in the beauty that has inspired the famous haiku master Basho and many other Japanese poets.

After some free time for lunch, we continue our trip to Zao, a very famous ski resort, where we will visit the Okama crater and relax in the famous hot springs. Hotel in Zao.

Day 9 ZAO – NIKKO – NARITA
NARITA

We start the day travelling to Nikko.

After a tasty regional lunch, we cross the iconic Shinkyo bridge, and visit the Toshogu shrine. The lavishly decorated shrine complex consists of more than a dozen buildings set in a beautiful forest. Countless wood carvings and large amounts of gold leaf were used to decorate the buildings in a way not seen elsewhere in Japan.

If time allows we will enjoy some free time at Kanmangafuchi Abyss, a riverside walking trail dotted with countless Jizo guardian statues.

We then proceed to Narita, where we will stay for our last night in Japan. Hotel in Narita.
