The Shonai Domain, located in the Shonai region facing the Sea of Japan in Yamagata Prefecture, prospered from the Edo period (1603-1868) under the feudal lord, Sakai who was a leader in the Tokugawa Clan.

CULINARY EXPERIENCE: In Tsuruoka, certified “UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy”, you’ll have a culinary experience at the traditional restaurant “Kurayashiki LUNA”. Get fresh vegetables and make different specialties from Yamagata with the chef, and eat all together.

MOUNT HAGURO: Haguro-san (Mount Haguro) is the most easily accessible of the three mountains of Dewa Sanzan. Haguro-san, The 2446 stone steps through ancient cedars to Haguro-san’s summit (419m) have been smoothed by centuries of pilgrims. The climb, taking up to two hours, passes Goju-no-to, a beautiful wooden five-storey pagoda dating from the 14th century. At the top, marvel at the San-shin Gosaiden, a vivid red hall that enshrines the deities of DewaSanzan’s three mountains. You can have “ Shojin Ryori” lunch at Saikan. Shojin Ryori is the vegan Buddhist meal of the monks. You will appreciate the freshly picked up vegetables.

KASAFUKU: Kasafuku means literally “good fortune umbrella”. They are little dolls made from cloth in many different shapes and arranged on strings hanging from an umbrella-type structure.

KAMO AQUARIUM: This unique aquarium in Yamagata has the world’s largest collection of jellyfishes on display (over 30 kinds), which offers a soothing spectacle to viewers with jellyfishes of many colors floating around.

SANKYO SOKO: Built in 1893 as a storehouse for rice, it has been used ever since. The storehouse is watched over by Japanese zelkova trees which line the nearby river and display different faces with the changing of the seasons.
