Drive to Hirosaki (37 km). Visit Hirosaki castle, a three-storey castle tower with fortified moats in Hirosaki park, one of Japan’s most famous cherry blossom viewing spots. Drive to Towada lake (77km). Arrive at hotel in Towada.

Day 2 TOWADA – OIRASE – KAKUNODATE – TAZAWAKO
TAZAWAKO

Breakfast at your hotel.
Walk to Yasumiya port. Experience the Towada lake cruise. Towada lake forms part of Towada-Hachimantai National park and is the largest caldera lake on the main island of Japan. The park is known for its autumn colours. Drive to Oirase and arrive at the Ishikedo rest house (18km). Walk along the Oirase-gorge, a picturesque mountain stream. Drive to Kakunodate (201km).
Lunch is not included. Arrival at Kakunodate and explore this former castle town on foot. The town is famous for its samurai tradition and its hundreds of weeping cherry trees. Depart for Hotel in Tazawako (28km).

Day 3 TAZAWAKO – HIRAIZUMI – GENBIKEI – ZAO ONSEN
ZAO ONSEN

Breakfast at your hotel.
Drive to Hiraizumi (128km). Visit Chusonji temple, a sacred Buddhist temple and world heritage site. Its most famous attraction is the Konjikido, a hall completely covered in gold.
Lunch is not included.
Drive to Genbikei (12km) and walk along Genbikeigorge, a series of cascading steams flanked by huge rugged boulders. Enjoy “grilled rice sticks”, a local speciality. Drive to your hotel in Zao Onsen Hot Spring (165km).

Day 4 ZAO ONSEN – AIZUWAKAMATSU
AIZUWAKAMATSU

Breakfast at your hotel.
Take the Zao ropeway to see a breathtaking panoramic view of the mountains. Famous for the frost covered trees in winter, called “Juhyo,” and nicknamed “Snow Monsters”. Drive to Aizuwakamatsu via the Zao Echo line drive (133km).
Lunch is not included. Arrive at Aizuwakamatsu, visit Aizuwakamatsu castle, also known as Tsuruga castle. It was the seat of the powerful Aizu clan, enthusiastic supporters of the Tokugawa regime throughout the Edo period of Japanese history. Drive to your hotel in Aizuwakamatsu (4km).

Day 5 AIZUWAKAMATSU – YAMADERA – MATSUSHIMA – SENDAI – TOKYO

Drive to Yamagata via the Tohoku highway (197km). Visiting Yamadera temple located in the mountains. The temple is where the legendary haiku poet Matsuo Bash? wrote his famous haiku, “Ah, this silence, sinking into the rocks – the voice of cicadas”.
Lunch is not included. Depart for Matsushima (100km). Experience the Matsushima bay cruise. The bay is renowned for being one of Japan’s three most beautiful scenic views. Depart for Sendai JR station. Arrive at Toyota Rent-a-car Sendai, Shinkansen exit desk. Return your rental car. Transfer to Tokyo from Sendai station by bullet train. Arrive in Tokyo.
